Administrative Assistant
Jason Alexander Gomez is a third-year student at Queens College in New York City, where he is set to complete an undergraduate degree in Asian Studies. He aspires to be a translator and interpreter in several languages, including Japanese, Thai, Spanish, and Mandarin; how he will manage to get this done is completely beyond him. Identifying as genderqueer and vegan, he's devoted to the cause for social justice. This notion might conflict with his anarchist sympathies, but he tends to view duality as more of an opportunity than an obstacle.
A willing victim of the anime and manga craze that's taken American popular culture by storm, Jason feels right at home with Japanese. The intricacy of the language's writing system readily appeals to the scholar in him, while its beauty sates his thirst for aesthetics. Drawing kanji is probably the closest he'll ever get to being an artist.
His favorite character is 蜜 (みつ: honey, nectar) because it incorporates 必, 虫, and 宀. When he writes them, it doesn’t seem like he’s just connecting strokes. Rather, it’s as if he’s sketching a picture. All three shapes have lodged themselves firmly in his mind, and he has to come to adore them, so he generally doesn't have trouble memorizing kanji that contain them. He feels that 蜜 is a veritable feast for his eyes; it goes quite well with tea, too! What’s not to like about it?
Jason currently lives in New York City with his family.
